Il mondo in paese

A conference devoted to projects for the reception and inclusion of refugees in rural Piedmontese municipalities - in particular mountain areas.

On 11th Thursday May 2017 starting at 9am at the Vivaldi Auditorium of the National University Library (Piazza Carlo Alberto 5 / A, Turin), Compagnia di San Paolo, Piedmont Region and the Metropolitan City of Turin, in collaboration with Associazione Dislivelli and the International and European Forum on Immigration Research (FIERI), organise Il mondo in paese. Dall'accoglienza all’inclusione dei rifugiati nei comuni rurali del Piemonte (The world in a village. From reception to inclusion of refugees in rural Piedmont), a conference dedicated to projects for the reception and inclusion of refugees in rural villages in Piedmont, especially mountain ones.

There are more than 14,000 migrants being hosted in Piedmont, 8% of the national total. Piedmont is the fourth Italian region after Lombardy (13%), Campania (9%) and Lazio (8%). This is a non-transitory trend involving not just large cities in the lowlands but increasingly rural municipalities too, which are asked to develop new projects to host immigrants. What happens when refugees settle into small rural villages? What impact does it have on the social cohesion of communities? What are the prospects for job integration and the economic effects on the territories involved? Can refugees be an opportunity for Piedmontese rural areas? A lot of questions to talk and reflect on Piedmont’s “widespread reception model”, discussing potential and problems to solve.

At the opening of the conference on Thursday 11th May, results will be presented of the study: Montanari per forza. Quali opportunità per i migranti forzati nelle montagne italiane? Quali opportunità per le montagne italiane nell'accoglienza dei migranti forzati? (Forced mountain-dwellers. What are the opportunities in Italian mountain areas for forced migrants ? What are the opportunities in receiving forced migrants for Italian mountain areas?), promoted as part of "Turin and the Alps" Programme of Compagnia di Sanpaolo and implemented by Associazione Dislivelli. Thanks to new data on the number of refugees hosted in the Piedmont Alpine communities, accounts of some areas affected by the phenomenon and analysis of some projects implemented in rural areas(CAS and SPRAR), Il mondo in paese intends to reflect on the contribution that mountain areas and more generally decentralised rural territories can offer, taking as an example those experiences that have made reception a value experience for guests, the community and the host territory. This is an opportunity for discussions aimed at identifying additional resources that Piedmontese institutions can deploy in order to better address refugee reception in our country.

Participation in the conference is subject to registration: please send a confirmation email by May 10 by comunicazione@torinoelealpi.it
