A new research institute at the heart of an ecosystem focused on driving technological and scientific innovation. The CSP IAS is dedicated to bridging the gap between academia and industry, attracting top global talent, and advancing cutting-edge solutions in artificial intelligence, robotics and aerospace.
Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and the Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence for Industry (AI4I) have signed a strategic agreement that marks the birth of the Compagnia di San Paolo Institute for Advanced Study (CSP IAS), a new centre dedicated to advanced research in artificial intelligence and industrial development.
This is a significant step that strengthens the local innovation ecosystem and consolidates Turin’s role as a leading player on the national scene, marking the birth of a project that combines academic excellence and technological progress, thus laying the foundations for an innovation-oriented future.
In this context, the Compagnia di San Paolo Institute for Advanced Study (CSP IAS), which will be located in the AI4I headquarters, is et to become a cutting-edge research centre. Intended to attract talented international researchers, the CSP IAS will stimulate cooperation between research and industry, accelerating progress in the field of artificial intelligenceand its industrial applications, with the aim of strengthening the innovation system in the area.
“With the Compagnia di San Paolo Institute for Advanced Study, we aim to enhance the visibility and reputation of the AI for Industry Foundation, creating a dynamic ecosystem that encourages collaboration with talented experts and researchers from the world’s leading academic and industrial research centres,” says Marco Gilli, Chair of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo. The CSP IAS,” he continues, “is established with a vision that goes beyond the local context; it is designed to serve as a key reference point for Italy and to strengthen connections between Italian centres specialising in AI and Big Data.” Looking ahead, Gilli adds, “We are committed to supporting the region’s and the country’s competitiveness by planning additional initiatives to support AI4I, including advanced training programs and technology transfer efforts.”
The institute will focus on four key areas, working to attract international experts to strengthen the AI4I ecosystem, foster networkingbetween researchers and businesses, offer advanced training through seminars, workshops and PhD programmes, and promote collaboration between academia and industry in artificial intelligence, robotics and aerospace.
Supported by a €4 million investment from Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo for the period 2025-2028, the project aims to drive technological and economic development in the region by supporting start-ups, SMEs and large companies.
With its shared governance structure, which includes a Strategic Committee and an Advisory Board of international experts, the CSP IAS will work to establish a model of open science and innovation. This will encourage technology transfer and initiatives that match young reserchers with industry leaders.
The establishment of the Compagnia di San Paolo Institute for Advanced Study aligns with the strategic priorities of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, which, through its “Harnessing the Value of Research” mission of the Planet Goal, seeks to create synergies between academic and industrial research to nurture world-class talent.
This objective builds on a path already initiated by the Foundation, which in recent years has supported Piedmont region’s specialization in the field of artificial intelligence. Through two editions of the “Artificial Intelligence” call for proposals, nine research projects have been selected and funded, promoting an ethical and sustainable approach to technological innovation.
The institute, with its ability to attract top-tier researchers and create opportunities for both national and international collaboration, aims to serve as a catalyst for technological and scientific development. The opening of the CSP IAS marks a new chapter for Turin, reinforcing its role as an innovation hub, and for Italy, positioning this initiative as a driving force for competitiveness and industrial progress.
