The technological refurbishment of the operating theatres at the Liver Transplant Centre of Molinette Hospital, part of Turin’s Città della Salute e della Scienza healthcare hub (directed by Professor Renato Romagnoli), has now been completed. The €230,000 project was supported by Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo with the involvement and at the request of AITF – the Italian Association of Liver Transplant Recipients.
The new TEGRIS system, with its range of highly innovative features, will enable new research paths, improve surgical strategies and enhance training and education. The system enables live surgical images to be captured and transmitted in real time to multiple screens throughout the operating theatre, allowing all members of the surgical team and observers to follow delicate transplant procedures. It also enables the recording and streaming of data, as well as integration with the hospital’s laboratory and radiology information systems and with endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery systems, creating a unique all-in-one solution.
As a nationally and internationally recognised centre of excellence, the Turin Liver Transplant Centre will thus be able to continue providing advanced training in liver transplantation and highly complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. The Centre is also approaching the milestone of 4,500 liver transplants since its foundation in 1990 by Professor Mauro Salizzoni. It currently holds the all-time Italian record for the number of liver transplants performed in a single calendar year, with 194 procedures carried out in 2025. The survival outcomes certified by the Italian National Transplant Centre also place the Turin Centre at the forefront, with one- and five-year post-transplant survival rates of over 95% and 87%, respectively.
