It is from this perspective that Alberto Anfossi, Secretary General of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, took part in the Action Labs working sessions of the Foundations Circle in Hong Kong. The discussions brought together philanthropic experiences from a range of international contexts, providing a space for reflection on the transformations under way and on the conditions needed for philanthropy to contribute to addressing them. During the sessions, Anfossi had the opportunity to present “Città dell’Educazione”, as a concrete example of the Foundation’s work aimed at promoting systemic change across communities.
Particular attention was devoted to the transformations affecting education, training and skills development , at a time when technological, economic and social acceleration is profoundly reshaping learning pathways and access to the world of work. The challenge lies in the ability of education systems to support younger generations in developing the skills they will need for the future, while ensuring quality, equitable access to opportunities and appropriate conditions for navigating career transitions. Against this backdrop, artificial intelligence represents both an opportunity and a potential source of inequality: alongside the possibilities offered by innovation, there is a risk of moving from the traditional digital divided to a new AI divide, linked to differences in the ability to access, use and understand new technologies.
Transforming education systems therefore requires a systemic approach, capable of bringing together public institutions, from ministries to schools, social organisations, communities and other local stakeholders, to build future-oriented educational ecosystems. This perspective strongly aligns with the strategic priorities set out in the Foundation’s Multi-Year Programme Document 2025-2028, particularly with regard to the central role of education, strengthening educational communities and the need to address the conditions that foster social cohesion, mobility and development.
Alongside education and technological transformation, the discussions also placed trust at the heart of efforts to build more effective relationships and new models of collaboration, together with philanthropy’s capacity to support innovation, evolve its leadership models andbuild alliances among diverse stakeholders.
