Following the final release of the buildings last summer, after a long period of occupation, resulting from an innovative programme to guide and support the former inhabitants of the buildings in finding independent employment and housing, coordinated by the City of Turin with the Prefecture, the Piedmont Region, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and the Diocese, the former Olympic Village will be completely redeveloped to become a social housing complex with over 400 beds providing temporary accommodation at special rates for students, young workers, city users.
Once fully operational, it will be managed by Camplus, Italy’s first co-living provider and university student housing provider, with 10,000 beds, including 2,000 in Turin from the next academic year.
The urban and social redevelopment of the buildings on Via Giordano Bruno looks beyond the COVID-19 emergency and aims to achieve a new objective: to offer modern and affordable housing, including a range of personal services, for Turin – a university city with a strong cultural vocation that continues to implement many exciting projects thanks to a variety of initiatives. Many of these initiatives – from Ivrea 24 to Campus Sanpaolo, Cascina Fossata to Luoghi Comuni Porta Palazzo e San Salvario – have arisen as part of a social housing system promoted by Turin’s foudations of banking origin – Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and Fondazione CRT – and by FIA (Fondo Investimenti per l’Abitare), which is managed by Gruppo CDP , its main investor, together with MIT and the leading banking, insurance and social security institutions.
Institutions which – together and within the framework of strong collaboration and synergy with the housing policies of the municipal authorities – have invested resources of over 200 million euros, in Turin alone, to create 1200 social housing units and 1350 beds in student and temporary residences.
Statement by the Mayor of Turin Chiara Appendino: “With the transfer of ownership of the seven buildings in the former MOI area to the Fondo Abitare Sostenibile Piemonte, the support of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and of the foundations of banking origin, and as a result of the project that provides for them to be used for social housing and personal services, the neighbourhood and its inhabitants will definitively regain ownership of these areas which have for too long been abandoned and become the scene of the largest illegal occupation in Europe. We can therefore say that the process of regenerating and returning that portion of the former Olympic Village to citizens has begun as a result of the fruitful teamwork by public institutions, archdiocese and foundations of banking origin, allowing the buildings to be vacated peacefully, offering the occupants the opportunity to live and work independently and therefore providing a solution to a critical situation that has dragged on for years”.

This collaboration, which is part of the City Plan signed last September and follows on from the support provided by CDP for the new Metro Line 2, also testifies to the strong synergy with local foundations of banking origin, which have always been our principal local partners”.

With the redevelopment of the buildings, Compagnia di San Paolo – through FASP – is also making its contribution to returning part of the city to the community to which it belongs and to the urban regeneration of this district, with the aim of improving everyone’s quality of life and promoting social cohesion.
