With the project now live on the concorsiarchibo.eu platform run by the Order of Architects of Bologna, the city officially kicks off a bold transformation that looks firmly to the future.
Entitled “La nuova GAM 4.0“, the competition is a joint effort involving Fondazione Torino Musei, the City of Turin and Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, with backing from Fondazione per l’architettura / Turin.
The ambitious initiative aims to rekindle the GAM’s avant-garde spirit while honouring its historic architecture. At its core is a commitment to cutting-edge sustainability and energy efficiency.
The main goal is to return the GAM to the public transformed into an international benchmark for 21st century museums, where technology, sustainability and cultural legacy come together under one roof.
Thanks to the backing of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo – which will fund the design phase and a substantial portion of the investment required – and the involvement of its company PR.I.S.MA, the “new GAM” is poised to be much more than a simple architectural makeover, in a transformation that will also directly impact the museum’s collections and visitor experience.
“Providing financial resources has always been a cornerstone of philanthropy. But the innovative path we’re taking embraces a more forward-thinking model, one rooted in a diverse range of tools that draw on the best practices in global philanthropy. This is what the Foundation calls Evolved Philanthropy, and it is thanks this approach that, in collaboration with PR.I.S.MA S.c.r.l.’s Real Estate Operations and Social Housing Department, and the Culture Back Office of the La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre, we are helping Fondazione Torino Musei with the process of publishing the international design competition. In line with our commitment to preserving and maintaining the cultural heritage, the renovation of GAM represents a huge opportunity for Turin. This project not only allows us to reimagine the museum’s legacy, but given the building’s unique character, it stands as one of the most significant design opportunities in Italy and I am confident it will draw the attention of top-tier professionals,” says Marco Gilli, Chair of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo.
The competition is divided into two distinct stages. The first is a pre-selection stage open to all professionals who meet the entry criteria, with the deadline for applications set for 5 June 2025.
From there, five finalists will be chosen to move on to the second stage, in which they will submit a comprehensive technical and economic feasibility proposal by 16 October 2025.
The winner will be announced in November 2025 and will receive a prize of €100,000.00 as a down payment for the future design stages. Runners-up from second to fifth place will be reimbursed for their expenses.
The “La nuova GAM 4.0” competition marks a significant step towards reinforcing the bond between Turin and its cultural identity, helping position the city as a rising hub on the international cultural stage.
