For the first time in the world artists, designers and citizens come together to create a participatory artwork by painting with the use of drones.
UFO (Urban Flying Opera) is a technological and artistic project. Its aim is to create a great participatory artwork through autonomous flight drones equipped with spray cans.
During the first phase of the project, from January to March 2018, anyone can contribute, drawing in the UFO app the way they see or imagine their city. Each contribution will be examined by a group of artistic curators and will be part of one or more collective drawings.
The final UFO work will be carried out at the Aurelio Peccei park in Turin (Barriera di Milano district), between 4th and 6th May 2018, when a fleet of four drones - each with a different colour according to the four-colour printing scheme (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) will move over a canvas more than 15 meters wide and 10 meters high.
UFO involves artists and designers, neighbourhood communities and university students (Politecnico di Torino and C-Lab) and aims to demonstrate how digital technologies can make culture and stimulate creativity by encouraging social aggregation.
The cultural associations of Barriera di Milano and other districts of Turin will be involved in the initiative and will keep the local inhabitants informed throughout the whole project: from creating the artistic contents to organising events.
UFO is a project promoted by Compagnia di San Paolo, conceived and curated by the Carlo Ratti Associati design studio, coordinated and realised by Istituto Superiore Mario Boella, in collaboration with Algoritmo.
