In the past few decades, the Compagnia di San Paolo has supported important restoration and enhancement of historical and artistic heritage in their own territories, sharing the strategic objectives for each area with the various institutional participants. The commitment to Genova for the museums of Strada Nuova, the churches of the old town as well as support for exhibitions shown in the Palazzo Ducale falls within this context.
In 2008, respecting its institutional and strategic commitment in favor of the city of Genoa and its cultural policies, the Compagnia di San Paolo joined the Fondazione per la Cultura (Foundation for Culture).
The Fondazione per la Cultura has its origins in the transformation of the Palazzo Ducale S.p.a., a completely publicly-owned company, which had developed special skills in the organization and management of major exhibitions organized initially on the occasion of the appointment of Genoa as the European Capital of Culture in 2004. Based on that experience a new configuration of the Palazzo Ducale was designed with a view to ensuring further development of the cultural network of Genoa, to increasing margins of competitiveness and targets of the investments, to innovating and strengthening management synergies among the cultural institutions of the city.
Annually, the Fondazione per la Cultura defines its activities in close liaison with the city's cultural policies, demonstrating its role as the main organizational support of the Assessorato alla Cultura (Department for Culture) of the City of Genova and confirming itself as an important subject of reference and interchange among the different local cultural institutions of the area, such as the Acquario, the Museo del Mare, the Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce.
The entrance of the Compagnia di San Paolo in the Fondazione per la Cultura is therefore in keeping with the commitment to restoration and enhancement of the historic artistic and monumental heritage in Genova. At the same time, it is consistent with the desire to strengthen the Compagnia di San Paolo’s proactive role in the management of cultural heritage, through participation in the new institutional organizations set up to promote innovative management practices and promote the systematization and networking actions for protection and enhancement.
The Area contributes to the institution with an annual contribution of € 500,000
Since 2008 the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo to the Fondazione per la Cultura has amounted to € 3,550,000
