This international event was organised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/philea.eu\/how-we-can-help\/collaboration-and-networking\/research-forum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research Forum<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/philea.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Philea \u2013 Philanthropy Europe Association<\/strong><\/a><strong> platform that brings together some of Europe\u2019s leading research-funding foundations<\/strong>. The occasion marked the start of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo\u2019s three-year chairmanship of the Forum.<\/p>\n<p>Over two days, the event provided a<strong> unique opportunity to explore <\/strong>how <strong>philanthropic foundations contribute to advancing research and innovation that <\/strong>strengthen Europe\u2019s economic competitiveness, with a particular focus on addressing<strong> social challenges and fostering sustainable and inclusive development models<\/strong>. The initiative, which brought together representatives from institutions in 11 countries, reflected <strong>Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo\u2019s strong commitment to fostering international collaboration and exchanges of knowledge among foundations<\/strong>, with the goal of promoting a philanthropy that focuses on impact and on <strong>creating shared value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The event opened with remarks by the Chair of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, <strong>Marco<\/strong> <strong>Gilli,<\/strong> and the Minister for Universities and Research, <strong>Anna<\/strong> <strong>Maria<\/strong> <strong>Bernini<\/strong>, both of whom stressed the importance of <strong>close coordination between public institutions and the philanthropic sector<\/strong> to drive meaningful progress in scientific and technological innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Their addresses highlighted how, as a result of this <strong>collaboration, philanthropy becomes a catalyst for transformation that serves the community<\/strong>, supporting basic and applied research <strong>not as a source of short-term solutions<\/strong> but as a means to <strong>develop structural interventions that tackle the root causes of problems<\/strong>. This <strong>systemic approach<\/strong> is crucial for creating shared value, supporting sustainable development and making a tangible contribution to reducing inequalities.<\/p>\n<p>The focus of the day on 6 November was the discussion with Manuel Heitor, Professor of the Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico of the University of Lisbon and former <strong>Portuguese Minister for Research,<\/strong> centred on the proposals outlined in the \u201c<strong>Align, Act, Accelerate: Research, Technology and Innovation to Boost European Competitiveness<\/strong>\u201d report. Authored by Heitor, the document presents a <strong>strategic framework for strengthening Europe\u2019s research and innovation system<\/strong>, taking into account the interim evaluation of the <strong>Horizon Europe<\/strong>\u00a0funding programme and the design of the forthcoming<strong> Framework Programme (FP10)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion \u2013 moderated by\u00a0<strong>Elena Casolari<\/strong>, CEO of OPES Italia \u2013 brought together<strong>Alberto Anfossi<\/strong>, Secretary General of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, and\u00a0<strong>Angel Font<\/strong>, Associate General Director of Research and Fellowships, Fundacion &#8220;La Caxia&#8221; and President of Philea, along with <strong>Danielle Kemmer<\/strong>, Senior Network Lead &#8211; Corporate Affairs di Novo Nordisk Foundation, <strong>Beth Thompson,<\/strong> Executive Director, Policy &amp; Partnerships, Wellcome Trust and <strong>Hanna Surmatz<\/strong> Head of Policy and Advocacy at Philea.<\/p>\n<p>The dialogue explored how <strong>foundations can work together<\/strong>\u00a0to align economic growth with social responsibility and systemic innovation.<\/p>\n<p>In his address,\u00a0<strong>Alberto Anfossi<\/strong>\u00a0presented the Foundation\u2019s strategic vision and the key priorities of the<strong>2025-2028 Multi-Year Plan<\/strong>, which focuses on\u00a0<strong>reducing inequalities<\/strong>\u00a0and promoting\u00a0<strong>sustainable development<\/strong>, with both basic and applied research serving as essential levers for economic and social growth. Internationalisation is identified as a\u00a0<strong>key approach<\/strong>\u00a0to enhancing the impact of the Foundation\u2019s actions, fostering connections and synergies among public, private and philanthropic actors.<\/p>\n<p>The second day of the event featured a <strong>working session<\/strong>\u00a0reserved for Philea member foundations.
