el_class=&#8221;page-content&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; el_class=&#8221;text&#8221;]<strong>Antibiotic resistance (ABR)<\/strong> is recognised by the WHO as a major <strong>global health emergency<\/strong>. The problem is particularly severe in Italy, <strong>where it causes approximately 12,000 deaths annually<\/strong>, out of a total of 35,000 across Europe, <strong>placing the country at the top of the rankings for mortality<\/strong> linked to antimicrobial resistance. The issue is part of the broader challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and is <strong>driven by the excessive or inappropriate use of antibiotics<\/strong>, with consequences for human health, animals and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Against this backdrop, and in honour of <strong>World Antibiotic Awareness Week<\/strong>, the joint initiative promoted by <strong>Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo<\/strong> <strong>and the City of Turin Local Health Authority<\/strong>, under the patronage of the Piedmont Region, was unveiled today. The project, entitled \u201c<strong>L\u2019antibiotico si cura. Nature Created Antibiotics, Science Discovered Them. Now It&#8217;s Up to Us to Preserve Their Effectiveness<\/strong>\u201d, marks the first result of a process<strong> launched in early 2025<\/strong> by the two Turin-based institutions, which led to the <strong>establishment of a multidisciplinary team<\/strong> charged with defining priorities, operational tools and intervention methods.<\/p>\n<p>The event was attended, amongst others, by the Piedmont Region President, <strong>Alberto Cirio<\/strong>, the Regional Health Director, <strong>Federico Riboldi<\/strong>, City of Turin Councillor, <strong>Ivana Garione<\/strong>, the Chair of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, <strong>Marco Gilli <\/strong>and City of Turin Local Health Authority Director, <strong>Carlo Picco<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <strong>Ilaria Capua<\/strong>, an internationally acclaimed virologist and Senior Fellow of Global Health at Johns Hopkins University SAIS Europe, who is supporting the initiative in <strong>a scientific advisory role<\/strong>, opened the meeting with a lecture on the <strong>vision guiding the project: Circular Health<\/strong>. An extension of the <strong>One Health<\/strong> paradigm, it emphasises the constant and reciprocal connection between the health of people, animals and ecosystems. <strong>This approach enables us to tackle antimicrobial resistance<\/strong> by recognising its systemic nature and the need for coordinated responses.<\/p>\n<p>A key feature of &#8220;L\u2019antibiotico si cura&#8221; is the <strong>commitment to building a stable alliance<\/strong> among the various fields of health: human, animal and environmental, along with the <strong>active involvement of local communities<\/strong>. The goal is to gradually develop <strong>a model that starts in Turin but can be replicated in other settings as well<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The next steps will involve <strong>targeted activities for healthcare professionals<\/strong>, including tools to support more appropriate prescribing, monitoring of specific classes of antimicrobials, and surveys on <strong>stewardship practices within healthcare facilities and pharmacies<\/strong>. Additional materials and resources may also be developed to help manage symptoms that do not require medication, encouraging more informed decisions in patient care.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, <strong>public-facing initiatives will be launched<\/strong>, including an awareness campaign and a series of short informational videos \u2013 <strong>\u201cknowledge pills\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 featuring the initiative\u2019s first Ambassadors. These are designed to promote more responsible behaviour and greater awareness of how to preserve the effectiveness of medicines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s event already marks the first achievement of this shared effort<\/strong>. A roundtable moderated by science journalist Anna Meldolesi brought together the inaugural Ambassadors \u2013 <strong>Guido Giustetto<\/strong>, Chair of the Association of Doctor Surgeons and Dentists of the Province of Turin; <strong>Mario Giaccone<\/strong>, Chair of the Association of Pharmacists of the Province of Turin; <strong>Secondo Barbero<\/strong>, Director General of Arpa Piemonte; <strong>Alessandro Dondo<\/strong>, Medical Director of the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont, Liguria, and Valle d\u2019Aosta; and <strong>Paola Saglietti<\/strong>, Director of Banco Farmaceutico ODV, clearly demonstrating the value of combining diverse areas of expertise.<\/p>\n<p>The core elements of the initiative were presented by <strong>Silvia Dorato<\/strong>, Head of the \u201cPromoting Well-being \u2013 Planet Goal\u201d mission at Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, and <strong>Paola Crosasso<\/strong>, Director of Hospital Pharmacies at the City of Turin Local Health Authority.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Institutional Statements<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Alberto Cirio, President of the Piedmont Region and Federico Riboldi, Regional Health Director <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCombating antibiotic resistance is a complex challenge that demands a coordinated effort among institutions, physicians, researchers and a well-informed public. To respond effectively, we must create the conditions for <strong>sustained collaboration among institutions, healthcare professionals, researchers and local stakeholders<\/strong>.\u00a0 With this goal in mind, the Foundation has put forward its <strong>experience in facilitating and coordinating complex processes<\/strong>, helping to <strong>build a shared effort that, for the first time<\/strong>, brings together, in a structured way, the <strong>expertise involved in safeguarding human, animal and environmental health<\/strong>.
