Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo (FCSP) stands out in the contemporary philanthropic landscape for its innovative and progress-driven approach. In the context of its evolution into a data-driven organisation, FCSP has launched an insights column dedicated to exploring the crucial role of Data for the common good.

The third article in the series, entitled “Open Data for a better society” emphasises the importance of this data being freely accessible and analysable by all. One example of this is Istat data, which can be downloaded and combined with other sources to provide a deeper understanding of social phenomena. This growing awareness of the potential of Open Data is vital for anyone seeking to better understand their local area in order to make informed decisions.

The Open Data Maturity Report, published annually by the European Union, measures member states’ investment in Open Data. Italy emerges with distinction from the Report, having achieved seventh place in the European ranking and reflecting an advanced level of maturity in its “open data” management policies.

However, the challenge remains to measure the real impact of this data on society. Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, with its Data for Citizen Engagement portal, is committed to making data not only accessible but also comprehensible. The project aims to empower citizens by providing them with the information they need to play an active part in community life.

The portal, which is available at opendata.compagniadisanpaolo.it, provides data on health, innovation, education, and the environment. This commitment reflects the Foundation’s dedication to promoting a data-driven culture, recognising the intrinsic value of Open Data for collective wellbeing.

To conclude, Open Data are not only a means to ensure the transparency of institutions, but also a fundamental resource for building a more informed and participatory society. Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo demonstrates, through its commitment to Open Data, how philanthropy can drive positive change through knowledge and innovation. In an increasingly connected world, data are essential for social progress.

Through its “Data Strategy” column, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo aims to shed light on the importance of data, with a view not only to providing guidance on how to manage effectively, in a way that has a positive impact on society, but also to raising public awareness and attesting to the success of its strategy to pursue the common good.
