Marco Gilli was elected Chair of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo on 16 April 2024. The Chair is appointed by the General Council and is the legal representative of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, chairing meetings, setting the agenda and directing the work of the General Council and Management Board, taking any urgent measures in the interests of FCSP reporting to the Management Board.

Marco Gilli

Marco Gilli was born in Turin in 1965 and has been Chair of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo since 16 April 2024; between 2019 and 2024 is was Scientific Attaché (Science & Technology Counselor) at theItalian Embassy in the USA.

In 1990 he was awarded the Andreoni Prize, presented by the Association of Engineers and Architects of the Polytechnic of Turin to the best Graduate in Electronic Engineering. He subsequently worked as a Researcher in the Electrical Engineering sector at the Polytechnic of Turin, becoming Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering in 1998.

Currently Full Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University’s First Faculty of Engineering, between May 2002 and September 2003, Gilli took on the role of Assistant Dean and subsequently Deputy Dean in 2005, a post he held until September 2005, when he was appointed Assistant Deputy Rector.

A career on the rise which led him, in 2012, to succeed Francesco Profumo as Rector of the Polytechnic of Turin.

Since 2005, as Professor, he has been responsible for various national and international projects and, as Rector, for partnership agreements regarding training, research and technology transfer with around 40 leading companies in the manufacturing, energy (including ENEL, ENI, TERNA, EDF, State Grid China) and Information Technology sectors.

As Rector, Gilli was also responsible for over 100 international agreements with the most prestigious technological universities in Europe and around the world, including UC-Berkeley and MIT, as well as the establishment of 11 Interdepartmental Centres at the Polytechnic of Turin, on the model of those existing at MIT / UC – Berkeley / EPFL, in the following strategic sectors: Big DataMachine Learning, Additive Manufacturing, Mobility, Energy, Health Technologies.

Since 1990, Marco Gilli has authored or co-authored over 200 publications in international scientific journals or in the proceedings of international congresses

His research activity has been mainly focused on the field of theory and applications of electrical networks and non-linear systems, neural networks and machine learning, and partly in the field of electromagnetism.

From 1999, Professor Gilli was General Chair, Technical Program Chair, Track Chair and Special session Chair for a significant number of International Conferences, organised in particular by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).

Already a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Member of the Turin Academy of Sciences since 2012, from 2019 and in all subsequent years, Marco Gilli has been included in the world ranking of scientists with the highest level of scientific productivity (World’s 2% Top Scientists) drawn up by Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier.

In 2017, the current Chair of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo was also Scientific Director of the “G7 – SMEs and Digital Transformation” session of the “Multistakeholder Conference” that preceded the G7 ministerial “ICT & Industry” meeting.

The prizes and awards received include the Premio Ravani – Pellati in 1998 – awarded by the Turin Academy of Sciences for contributions to progress in the field of physics and electrical engineering in particular – and the Best Paper Award of the International Journal of Circuit Theory and Applications in 1994 and 2004.

The other important positions achieved by Gilli include – to name just a few – his presence as Member of the Scientific Council of Fondazione ENEL, his role as President of the “Microsoft Innovation Center – MIC”, Turin and his qualification as member of the Board of Directors of the LINKS Foundation.
