Turin's city of health gets a new cat scan

On October 1st , the new intraoperative portable CAT scan of the Neurosurgery at the Turin’s City of Health and Science University Hospital  was presented.

The new intraoperative portable CAT scan of the Neurosurgery at Turin’s City of Health and Science University Hospital (directed by Professor Alessandro Ducati) is an extremely effective tool in the treatment of neurosurgical diseases. Having a CAT scan in the operating room is essential; it ensures improvements in the safety of the surgery, post-operative results and, consequently, reduction in the hospitalisation in both cranial and spinal pathology.

This tool adds complementary X-rays to surgeons’ eyes, allowing further decreases in the margin of error and complication, and increasing procedure accuracy and precision.

The intraoperative CAT scan helps in the coordination of the latest generation instruments already in use in the ward, such as the 3D endoscope for diseases of the skull base and hypophysis; intra-operative ultrasound and fluorescence for brain gliomas; laser, ultrasonic aspirator or  neuromonitoring, useful and sometimes necessary, for all other neurosurgical pathologies.

The equipment cost roughly € 1.2 million and was purchased thanks to the support of Compagnia di San Paolo.

At the inauguration on September 1st , Franca Fagioli from Compagnia’s General Council was present.
